What is the best way to convert 35mm color slides to high-res digital photos?

Terry B asked:

The scanner I have does not scan into high resolution format. Will the best results come from scanning them in myself, or paying a service to scan them in? How do these services offer varying levels of resolution? These slides are from my years in college (in the 80’s) and high resolution is the main goal I’m trying to achieve. A little more cost is ok with me. I really just want the best resolution possible. Thanks in advance for your help!

if you have the negatives, and I have all of mine even from the 60s, you should get a better scanner and scan the negs

Other than the methods yo mention, I am sorry to say that I don’t have a clue.
